Mission
The Stop Animal Cruelty Magnetic Ribbons were designed by the Love Your Pet Corporation to raise awareness of the
ongoing problem of animal abuse in our province, country and the world.
- “We found that Albertans are not aware of the current situations surrounding animal
abuse in our province and we want people to start getting involved by speaking out and learning
about the legislation. Our ultimate goal is to reach enough people to change our legislation. If
everyone was more aware of the signs of animal abuse and the link between animal cruelty and domestic
violence, hopefully we would do more to prevent the cycle of violence by amending our laws and
stopping violence before it starts. love Your Pet Corporation is in the process making Baby Blue
the International Colour of the Fight Against Animal Cruelty. It's a fight we won't give up on!”
- - Constance Burlock, Owner, Love Your Pet
Currently, Love Your Pet Corporation is fundraising to create an Animal Rehabilitation Centre for
victims of animal cruelty. To contribute to this cause, please click the PAY PAL donate button on this page.

“We want to provide a safe and loving place for animals from a variety of situations such as puppy mills,
hoarding cases, domestic abuse situations, dog fighting rings among other situations. In addition, we want
to provide a final retirement home to senior animals so they do not have to end their life in a shelter environment.
Most of these animals give their entire lives full of loyalty to one family and are left alone in a shelter
with nobody to help them as they age or are euthanized.”
- - Carly Schick, Animal Care Professional with Love Your Pet
- “There are so many injustices going on with retired
racehorses going to the slaughter house and pets being dumped on the side
of the highway. Our dream is to save each and every life that we can.”
- - Rose Burlock,
Animal Care Professional with Love Your Pet.
The Problem
Our current legislation provides no protection for stray, wild or feral animals and fails to
provide added protection for law enforcement animals. As it stands now, animals are still
considered property and therefore are not afforded the basic treatment that they deserve.
Puppy mills and training animals for the purpose of fighting is still considered legal.
Canada's national animal cruelty legislation hasn't been significantly updated since 1892
and is extremely difficult to enforce. Currently, less than 1/4 of 1% of animal abuse
complaints lead to successful convictions.
For more information on Animal Welfare please research the International Fund for Animal Welfare.
Canada is one of the last countries to effectively rewrite their laws so that we can
successfully charge abusers. So far, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Australia, the
Philippines, and Thailand provide more defined protection.
The media only shows a portion of abuse that is occurring each and every day in our province.
Every day hundreds of animals are taken into shelters around Alberta.
They end up there for any number of reasons.
-
“I remember for the last two summers, we had anywhere from 80 to 90 animals each day being brought
into the Calgary Humane Society. A huge contributor to these numbers was the puppy mills all around Alberta.”
- - Lori Meldrum, Animal Care Professional for Love Your Pet
Although pet stores claim to not purchase from puppy mills, Humane Societies from all over the world
project that a vast majority of all puppies in pet stores are from mills. The fact of the matter is
that reputable breeders would NOT sell to a pet store. A responsible breeder wants to know where each puppy
goes and what type of home they are going into. Over the past decade the puppy mill industry has increased in Canada.
Please find the following information on the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies'.
In 1995, Agriculture Canada implemented legislation to limit the number of puppies that are being imported from the United States.
Unfortunately, this decrease in imported U.S. puppies has created a demand which resulted in more Canadian mills.
